PSHE and RSE

Subject Leader: Mrs Reid

Our Vision

At Brandling Primary School, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.

To create a safe and supportive space for all children to participate and share during all PSHE lessons.

How do we teach PSHE & RSE at Brandling Primary School?

At Brandling Primary we use the Jigsaw scheme of work to support teaching and learning in PSHE and RSE. We follow this programme from EYFS through to Year 6. Lessons are taught weekly and are adapted to suit the needs for children at Brandling including pupils with additional needs.

 What is PSHE?

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of children, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. It also promotes core British values within its teaching.

 What is RSE?

RSE stands for Relationships & Sex Education. Relationships Education was made compulsory by the government to be taught throughout primary school, however, in line with government advice, we also teach Sex Education to Year 6 children (which can be opted out by parents/carers). Relationship Education includes friendships, families, respectful relationships and being safe online. Sex Education focuses on physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty.

 What is Jigsaw?

Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Jigsaw is designed on a whole school approach with all year groups working on the same puzzle (theme) at the same time. Each theme starts with an introductory session.
